Box intro to gel location
Game: "Global Explorers"
Objective: Teach students about longitude, latitude, elevation, and time zones by having them locate and defend the coordinates of famous landmarks on a blank grid map of the world.
Materials Needed:
A blank grid map of the world (without any numbers or labels)
Cards with famous landmarks (e.g., Mount Everest, Eiffel Tower, Grand Canyon)
Tokens or avatars representing students or teams
Tools for measuring and marking coordinates (rulers, compasses, etc.)
Clocks representing different time zones
Gameplay:
Setup: Divide the students into teams and give each team a blank grid map of the world and a set of tools.
Landmark Challenge: Assign or let teams choose 4 famous landmarks. They must locate these landmarks on their blank grid map, mark the coordinates (longitude, latitude), and note the elevation.
Time Zone Twist: For each landmark, teams must also calculate the current time in that location based on a given time zone.
Defend Your Map: Once the teams have marked their landmarks, they present their maps to the class and defend their choices. They must explain how they determined the coordinates and time, and answer questions from other teams or the teacher.
Scoring: Points are awarded for accuracy, reasoning, and successful defense of their choices. Bonus points can be given for creativity or additional insights.
Reflection: Discuss the concepts learned, common mistakes, and real-world applications of these geographical and temporal skills.
